Tip # 3 - What are Inversions?
Other Tips: Learn by Ear * Chords * Inversions * Sheet Music

Inversions are another thing to learn about chords. In the previous section, the chords were broken down into notes that were arranged in a rising order.

But if you switch those notes around, you will end up with the same chord. The only difference is that we call this an inversion.

C major

C - E - G

C major inversion

E - G - C

As you can see, both of the chords above share the same notes, but they are arranged in different orders. However, switching up the order again can result in several other C major inversions, so be aware that this isn't our only option. As long as it has the notes "C," "E," and "G," it's C major.

The same applies with other chords as well.
